Coaches often ask:

“What’s the best question to ask?”

The truth?

There isn’t one.

But there are questions that consistently unlock thinking at a deeper level.

Here are seven we return to time and time again.

1. What feels most important right now?

Cuts through noise. Creates focus.

2. What are you assuming?

Surfaces invisible constraints.

3. What are you avoiding?

Gently reveals resistance or fear.

4. If nothing changed, what would happen?

Clarifies urgency.

5. What does ‘success’ actually look like?

Moves from vague aspiration to observable outcomes.

6. What are you not saying out loud?

Invites honesty and psychological safety.

7. Who do you need to become to lead this well?

Shifts from tactics to identity.

Why these work

Great coaching questions do three things:

They slow thinking.

They create distance.

They surface truth.

If a question feels clever, it’s probably wrong.

If it feels simple but uncomfortable, you’re likely close.

The goal is not brilliance.

It’s clarity.
